IQ windowdrive – the intelligent window drive product family
From automatic ventilation to a clever smoke and heat extraction concept: intelligent window drives from the IQ windowdrive series by GEZE offer a wide range of options. Parameter setting, synchronisation and networking can all be done individually and networked with the building management technology. Furthermore, they offer intelligent pinch protection for power-operated windows.
Intelligent windows thanks to smart window drives
Chain drive Powerchain
When architects and specialist planners address the ventilation or smoke and heat extraction concept in the course of a public building project, the question of the right window drives quickly arises. Buildings today are becoming increasingly user-friendly, energy-efficient, and overall “smarter”. As a result, more components of the building technology are becoming automated. Our IQ windowdrive product family offers intelligent drive control for power-operated windows in buildings used by large numbers of people. The window drives ensure safe smoke and heat extraction system and ventilation operation, and can be integrated into the building management technology. They can be used for everyday natural, automated ventilation, while also providing the necessary opening width to safely extract smoke from the building in the event of a fire. To fulfil future specifications, the IQ windowdrive family offers different drive types depending on the installation situation.
Intelligent ventilation and safe smoke and heat extraction concept
Because they are capable of intelligent communication with one another, drives from the IQ windowdrive product family are equally suitable for ventilation and smoke and heat extraction modes of operation. The window drives have different opening and closing speeds depending on the mode of operation.
Automatic and safe ventilation
In the ventilation operating mode, the window drives allow windows to be opened as needed and positioned precisely. This can mean, for instance, that windows in offices open so quietly that the process is not audible. Windows can be activated using a push button or via an automatic process within the building management technology, for example.
Reliable smoke and heat extraction system operation
At the same time, window drives from the IQ windowdrive family are an important part of clever smoke and heat extraction systems. In contrast to ventilation mode, in the event of smoke forming or even a fire, the drives work immediately at maximum speed, opening the windows in less than 60 seconds. The windows open to their maximum opening angle, allowing rapid smoke extraction from the building.
Window drives in the IQ windowdrive family allow windows to be opened and closed as needed with activation precise down to the millimetre and the second – for ventilation and smoke and heat extraction applications.

The right drive for every type of window
Drives used on heavy windows need to be especially powerful. Chain drives are usually used in these cases – such as the Powerchain chain drive from the IQ windowdrive product family. Slimchain chain drives, on the other hand, are a good choice for smaller windows used for ventilation purposes. For roof windows, planners often choose the E 250 NT spindle drive. We recommend the F 1200+ ventilation drive for particularly large and heavy turn-and-tilt windows.
System solutions for added safety
Additional components are added to turn drives from the IQ windowdrive product family into a system solution. The Power lock locking drive ensures additional safety for windows with large leaf surface areas. This allows windows to withstand higher wind loads, and ensures they are sealed against driving rain with an air-tight seal. In addition, the locking drive makes potential burglaries difficult.
The newest addition to the product family - the TÜV-tested safety module IQ box Safety - now further improves safety. It helps create intelligent pinch protection for power-operated windows. This means window drives can be used even in buildings where people in special need of protection, untrained individuals or people who are unable to reason may be present – such as in schools, hospitals or shopping centres. Protection rating 4 applies in such buildings to ensure compliance with the Machinery Directive. IQ box Safety and sensors secure pinching and shearing edges on main and secondary closing edges. The module ensures safe stopping and reversing of the drive if someone reaches into the danger zone, thus enabling maximum safety in ventilation mode.

All products in the IQ windowdrive family can also be combined with the MBZ 300 and THZ smoke and heat extraction control panels from GEZE.
Integration into the building management system
Furthermore, there is the question of drive activation and connection to the building management technology. Drives from the IQ windowdrive product family can be integrated into building management technology in combination with IQ BOX KNX. This combination creates intelligent window systems that you can use to safely and reliably operate the ventilation and smoke extraction systems in your building.
Technical features of window drives of the IQ windowdrive range
Activation with precise positioning and individual parameter setting
Window drives in the IQ windowdrive series offer intelligent activation with parameter setting as needed according to individual use within the building. While traditional window drives often have only start/stop activation, the IQ windowdrive series allows the window to be opened to a precise position. In addition, different opening and closing speeds allow for safe and convenient use.
In the event of a fire alarm, the drives switch to smoke and heat extraction mode of operation: the pre-defined values for this situation, which generally deviate significantly from the ventilation mode of operation, then take immediate effect. For example, windows with a ventilation stroke of 300 mm are generally configured with a smoke and heat extraction stroke of 800 mm.
IQ windowdrives communicate via LIN-BUS
Communication between window drives is handled via the LIN-BUS. This enables automated windows to be operated in both solo and synchronous mode. In synchronous mode, up to four drives from the IQ windowdrive product family can be synchronised without an external control device.
Subsequent controllers for locking drives are also integrated via the LIN-BUS. Networking the window drive and locking mechanism ensures that the components automatically complete their work steps in the correct sequence. This securely locks a building at night after it is ventilated during the day.

Quick commissioning due to simple configuration of drive parameters
Our IQ windowdrive service case allows you to quickly commission window drives. Connecting to the ST 220 service terminal also allows for simple parameter setting of the IQ windowdrives. The synchronising unit allows the user to configure drive parameters for the different automatic ventilation and smoke and heat extraction modes of operation.
Once all drives and components are installed, diagnostic values such as distances travelled or operating duration can be read out. If the window drives are integrated into the building management technology, then status reports and state signals can be communicated to it. This ensures you always have an overview of your window technology and receive an immediate warning in the event of a fault.
